Online vs Campus Degrees: What Employers Actually Think
The pandemic accelerated the normalization of online education. A 2024 survey of 500 hiring managers found that 87 percent consider online degrees from accredited institutions equally valid to campus degrees. What matters more is the institution reputation, the candidate demonstrated skills, and relevant project experience. Top universities now offer online versions of their most popular programs, often identical to the on-campus curriculum. The key differentiator is not delivery method but institutional quality. An online degree from a respected university carries more weight than a campus degree from an unknown institution. Employers evaluate candidates holistically: portfolio, internships, and interview performance matter more than how the degree was delivered. The exception is in fields requiring hands-on laboratory or clinical experience, where campus programs retain an advantage.
